Kite Spots & Kite Trips

Kiting Klein Curacao

Klein Curacao

A small island 15 miles off the coast of Curacao, Klein Curacao (meaning little Curacao) is an incredible kitesurfing spot, but should be reserved for advanced surfers. Because the island is further out to sea, it has off shore winds which are fiercer than the trade winds that blow through the bays. There will also be other swimmers, snorkelers, scuba divers, and boats roaming about. If you’re an advanced surfer, this will be a non-issue, but beginners are advised to avoid this spot. The crossing can be a bit bumpy due to the rough nature of the Caribbean.

Kitesurfing is allowed everywhere on Klein Curacao. The kite spot is on the beautiful beaches of the west side. This is only recommended to a limited extent for beginners because the wind blows offshore. So if you can’t safely fly high when kitesurfing, you’d better do without. But a rescue boat would also be recommended for advanced users, so it is best to join an organized tour to get help on site in the event of an emergency. Since the island is flat, undeveloped and there is little vegetation, the east wind is not disturbed and comes clean over the island. This ensures smooth speed slopes in the bank area of the kite beach. The east side of the island is rugged and unsuitable for kiting. In the south of the island you will find small waves with which you can play wonderfully.

St Willibrordus

On the southeast side of Curacao, south of the village of Sint Willibrordus, which is also called Williwood, lies the Jan Kok Baai. It is known for its flamingos, which have their breeding grounds in this lagoon and can be observed from a viewing platform on the northern edge of the bay.

The kite spot is in the far south-west corner of the lagoon. However, it is not easy and can only be reached via unpaved paths. The water is flat, and has plenty of wind chop for good kitesurfing. Located behind the flamingo sanctuary.

St Joris Kitesurfing

St Joris Baai

Calm waters and steady breeze define St. Joris Bay as an excellent spot to practice kitesurfing. It’s easy to spot the bay, especially on the weekends, since the telltale kites can be seen in the sky before the water even comes into view.

The bay is pretty big, and is protected from the waves of the East side of the island, keep the water calm but the wind fierce. You can visit this site to check out the details on kitesurfing lessons. It is a two by two kilometer lagoon, which due to its bays from the air is reminiscent of a four-leaf clover. It is separated from the open and rough Caribbean sea by a 500 meter long and 100 meter wide channel and is therefore somewhat offset inland.

The distance to the historic city center of Willemstad is 15 kilometers and it can be reached in 20 to 30 minutes by car.
